Or how about an 'average' driver vs an ADer...it would be too easy for the viewer to dismiss the poor driver's skills: "I'm better than him so I must be good!"

Fair point, perhaps take my example and your's together with a comparison of a young "average" and a young ADer.
Problem is, in such a public domain, the subtext of AD can't be admitted, even though that's a personal decision.
