I see this sign regularly when out and about. I'm sure you'll know it means Zebra crossing.

Thing is, quite often there isn't one :?
Am I misunderstanding it? I can see why they've put something out as the road sometimes has people crossing in that area but wouldn't that be better served by the 'Pedestrians in road' Sign?

Doesn't mean Zebra crossing, just pedestrian crossing. On a dual carriageway there is often a gap/overlap in the central barrier at the same location.

I thought that's what it was but the DfT books show Zebra crossing :?

Is it the old; 'all grass is green but not everything that is green is grass'?

Your sign means Zebra crossing but is often used by highways officials who do not check. You'll often see this sign at uncontrolled crossing points, where there's no footway and on the approach to PELICAN and PUFFIN crossings.

Regularly see it where there is no official crossing at all!

I interpret the sign as 'pedestrians may be crossing' - ie I look out for pedestrians in exactly the same way that I would if there was no warning sign present.

I think the sign if often used where there is a footpath (of the countryside variety) which crossed over the road.

I understand what they are trying to suggest. What I don't understand is why the don't use the sign they already have just for that purpose. Pedestrians in road.

Perhaps because "in road" is different to "crossing road"?
It's hair splitting probably but at least you have a warning, possibly because a particular site has had problems. Maybe a pedestrian fatality.
Always a commentary, spoken or not.
Keeps one safe. One hopes.
