Long time ago now but iirc Phil Read challenged a knee down rider, albeit a journalist, and won.
Then, tucked away somewhere, I have a book containing a photo of Hailwood drifting a racing motorcycle and I'm sure I've seen photos of him with a knee out, although on slow corners.
You're probably correct though, the problem with the knee down style is that you need to focus on that, thus, in public road riding, possibly losing observation.
Always a commentary, spoken or not.
