If we have a need for signs, then the signs in use should be placed in obvious positions, they should be quickly and easily understood and they should be relevant. There's no point in arguing that some people won't use them to full advantage, if at all, because those people will always exist. However, I suspect that many people develop an apathy toward road signage because of the overwhelming quantities to be found along our roads, often misleading or confusing in their advice.

What can be done is to simplify and consolidate so that those of us who do make use of signage get a clearer picture of the road ahead. Rather than put s recommended speed limit on bends, simply grade them according to their relative tightness aqnd difficulty. Keep a small chevron sign to mark the bend itself and get rid of some of the road paint that forever needs renewing and becomes harder to see when the road is wet.
