Anyone know what this is on a main road in Bristol...I don't think it's a speed camera as it's not yellow...

I would't like to say that it's not a speed camera. There seem to be many strange devices springing up on the roadside nowadays. We have two cameras on the way into Poole at traffic lights. One on the Broadstone Way at its junction with Cabot Lane, is a large device that is a speed and red light camera. The other on the Holes Bay Road just as you enter Poole, is also a speed and red light camera, but this one is only a small device, and there are three white calibration marks painted on the road. However, both these cameras are painted yellow.

According to the police, the one on the Holes bay road is not put there as a "safety" camera, but because of local concerns. This camera has generated a great deal of fury localy amongst motorists, as it has generated a fair income for the exchequer.

It's a 'Watchman', as described here:

Thanks Tony! Don't remember seeing electronic speed warning signs either side of it but that's probably just my poor obs. I also didn't realise the rules on fixed speed cameras being yellow and clearly visible had changed but apparently they have in 2008.

Tameside has had a number of these for several years now. In effect, they're an electronic version of "community speedwatch" ;)
