this is probably a daft question but how is this sign interpreted for a car driver and why?

You can only go in the direction the top right green light & only when it is illuminated.

No left turn for cars, left turn only for buses, taxis and cycles when green light is showing. I guess it explains it as it would be confusing to have a no left turn sign combined with a green left arrow light!

thanks, these kind of signs confuse the hell out of me, not being exposed to them on a regular basis - i've had many a near miss on unfamiliar inner city roundabouts with not knowing when i'm supposed to stop and go and what lane i'm supposed to be in

Where is this sign and what's the situation: why left turns sometimes?

Ah thanks. So the 'full' sign is actually a traffic light?

I think it's very badly designed and although it makes sense when explained it's not obvious and all signs should be bearing in mind you may have a couple of seconds at most, to take it in.

I keep meaning to take a photo of a fantastic conglomeration of signs very near me if only to show at our IAM associate class-room sessions to provoke discussion. I will try and snap the scene very soon and post it as it's quite beautiful (if you're a sign fetish) and a superb waste of tax payers money if you're not.

I must drive past this sign a good few times a year and never thought it confusing until I seen it out of context.
I was well stuck
