I believe so, though I don't recall seeing a similar restriction mentioned on the RoSPA site...

I don' think I'm in *that* much of a hurry that I can't practice getting what I already know right for three months before joining IAM/RoSPA. I'm hoping to make the driving day on the 17th, too...

I'm carefully balancing my budget book and trying to remain fed for the remainder of the month. I reckon I can afford an early focus 1.6 zetec, providing I can find an insurance company that will give me a reasonable deal. I'm going to have some difficulty with logistics, though. Having insurance for test drives will be "fun" when it comes to private sales, having time to go and see vehicles is pretty much a non-starter in the week, and transport to see cars at the weekend is going to be fun, too. I'm hoping to persuade a friend to take me to a few places on saturday, and you never know, I might manage a purchase then (pleasepleasepleaseplease!)

Assuming I have a car by then and I have enough money spare for fuel, I'd *love* to come up to the best country in the world and drive on some of the best roads in the world

Well, it's all dependent on getting a car by then, but I certainly hope to!

I've been looking on ebay and I've found some foci in my slightly expanded budget, and I've found an insurance company that cares about my 3 years motorbike NCB and are quoting £577.91 for a focus 1.6 zetec, or £610ish for the 1.8 diesel estate...

I just need somebody to go shopping with me, now

I might be able to find some volunteers from my local buddies, but if anyone fancies joining in, that'd be grand, too

Stay away from the TDDi (earlier diesel) engines... the TDCi is much much better. But pricey - get the Zetec, you'll not regret it.

Have a good look round all the dealers and Autotrader to see what you can get for your cash. A Focus will make a good first car, but don't limit yourself to only them. Have a look at the Skoda Fabias, they are cheap and seem well put together with VW parts. The diesels can be nippy and frugal.

Personally, I keep clear of French stuff as parts can be expensive, Japanese tend to be characterless (unless going for a "rice-rocket"), and Italian's can be a good way of improving your maintenance skills.

Have you considered a trip to a local auction? Prices are lower and if you have some experianced eyes with you, you may bag a bargain...
