Motorway roadworks - change in signing?

The 50s are normally large signs that can be seen well in advance too. I cant say I've ever been caught out by a speed limit change on the motorway. The visibility and size of signing provides an easy observation target.

Not if the motorway is busy - vehicles ahead obscure the signs or twisty. To reduce from...ahem...70 to 50 by acceleration sense alone takes a surprising distance.
