Sadly its all a ploy to get us to avoid driving on the good roads  .

As and when I head south on the bike or in the car, I avoid the motorways and prefer the older A roads such as the A701 then the A74 then A6. BUT when I get as far as say Lancashire I am virtually forced to join the congestion on the M6 because there is no NSL. The country roads seem to vary between extended 30 / 40 village limits, joined up by stretches of 50 limits.

Another reason I like staying and driving north of Hadrian's Wall.

The infection is spreading North with the Scottish Exec issuing the guidelines on setting rural limits, then expecting the roads authorities to do as they say.

The difference between guidance and instruction?

I'm sure you are going to find much of the A6 between Carlisle and Penrith reduced to 40 mph soon too Rennie, as a knee-jerk response to a significant number of fatal accidents on the road.

There have a significant number of high speed fatalities on the road in the last couple of years.

Boy racers, bikers, so no surprises there

But...

Is a speed limit going to change that activity?

Not unless they erect average speed cameras on every road, which will only ensure adherence to the speed limit?

Of course in political eyes that will solve everything?

First Impressions:-

40 mph sections - most go through villages/settlements which is fair enough.
However, the Great Cubley "by-pass?" - don't know why thats a 40.

50mph - I see a lot of thought has gone into this, or maybe not. Where its not a 40 or a 30 lets make it 50?

NSL - This part amazes me! A section of about 500m on a scheme over 30 miles. I'd have thought that since the rest of the road was being made a 50? Why make this tiny bit NSL?
