I know, I know. Many people ask why even bother, but apparently it does fulfil a valuable role in keeping Scotland from crashing down into more valuable parts of the country so it's worth a visit.

Or is it?

I recall we have a few proud folk from around there, so here's the question:-

Three days. Based around Skipton.

Is there anything to do at all?
(apart from Captain Picard's Fish and Chip shop)

Are there *any* good roads? (Assume an appetite of 300 miles per day)

More than you can manage. If you make the assumption that many of us who love driving want to live in that part of the country, you won't be far wrong.

Dales, moors, flatlands, wolds... you name it, there's everything you could ask for - even ridings and the way to get there is interesting too, if you avoid the main roads - and folk are generally generally friendly too

Harewood House, Castle Howard, museums in York, York generally, over the North Yorkshire Moors to the seaside, museum of film in Bradford - it's not all beautiful scenery and stunning roads.

Lovely area, well away from the smog, however watch the trunk roads as the English HA have been saving the environment by using up the planets natural resources to introduce different speed limits with the cursory 200 signs up and down every dale.

If you plan it well, you could drive through the Peak District on the way up which would make it fun. Avoid all those dreary Motorway thingies, designed and built by the god of boredom himself.

York itself is a place I have lots of time for. Lots to see and do. But on foot, as it's not the best place to drive around. As for the rest of Yorkshire, if you like watching sheep, you'll be in seventh heaven!

Malham Cove and Brimham Rocks are both a 'must see'

b road to grassington then to pateley bridge

b road to horton in ribblesdale then to ribbledale viaduct then to hawes (evo and top gear road)

open roads fast bumpy

watch for day tripers/sheep good cross views plenty of offsiding

a road either direction out of hawes tight to bedale in places

a65 poor lots of 40 mph

ilkley for chip shop - not as good as when i used to go to school there but still ok

avoid bettys tea rooms pretentious rubbish

1. Grantham - A1 - Scotch Corner. 120 miles. 2hr 20
2. Scotch Corner - Eggleston - Hexham. 60 miles. 1hr 30
Lunch on the wall
3. Hexham - Alston - Brough. 75 miles. 1hr 30
4. Brough - Keld - Buttertubs - Hawes - Ribbledale Viaduct - Settle - Skipton. 60 miles. 2hr
