Does anyone know why on some low bridge signs there are different size black triangles on the top and bottom of the height shown, i.e a small triangle on the bottom and a larger one on the top, and sometimes the other way around?

Cannot find one with large black triangle at the bottom.

The round signs have the small triangles top and bottom
The triangle signs have a large at top and small at bottom

It seems that the large triangle at the top of the triangle sign denotes the exact position of the height and if that is the norm then that would be why it is larger - just my take - maybe someone else can give a better reason....

The black triangles differentiate the height restriction signs (top and bottom) and the width restriction signs (side to side).

Looking in the highway code, the warning sign for the height restriction appears to have a large black triangle at he top and a small black triangle at the bottom. The round prohibition sign has 2 black triangles of equal size.

^^What they said

Warning sign has large inverted triangle at top, smaller one at the bottom. Mandatory restriction (circular) signs have same sized (smaller) triangles top & bottom. See Traffic Signs Manual Chapter 4
