One for the Traffic Sign 'nerds'

On the M42 'variable' limit section they display...ahem...well...variable limits on the electronic gantries above each lane.

Yesterday it was set to 60 for a few miles and then they showed an NSL sign...except the circle and diaganal were in white with a black backgroud i.e. reversed colours from the sign in the Highway Code.

Is this legal?

Whether it is legal or is not will not really matter as the repeater signs for any reduced limit will have ended but I like the question :)

My guess is that they cannot reverse the colouring to look like the 'normal' sign

HA signs here

They also introduced the other style of red X - I can't imagine they'd bring in these "different" signs if they weren't approved?

IIRC, there were specific traffic orders/acts created relating to the use of the variable speed limit on the M42, so I suspect it would be covered under that. Had a quick look and turned up the following, but didn't have time to find "diagram 670 in Schedule 2 to the 2002 Regulations" which outlines the permissible sign formats....

Some regulations related to M42 here - http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2009/uksi_20091570_en_1

670 is just a mandatory speed limit sign - red ring with a number in it.
671 is the NSL sign and in the notes it says no variants, but I suppose this could be overruled.

Thanks to the 'respondees' but no one has confirmed if they are legal yet...there must be someone here...

(take the point about lack of repeators but it should be clearer - can't see why they don't show a standard black on white background myself)

Yes they are legal. It is official in Traffic law that black is white and white is black. :D

TSRGD 58(3):-

(3) If the construction or method of operation of a variable message sign prevents a sign from being displayed in the colours shown for it in the appropriate diagram in Schedule 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 or 12, a black legend or symbol on a white or yellow background may be displayed as a white, off-white or yellow legend or symbol on a dark background, provided that any red triangle or red circle forming part of the sign is included.

Aha - thanks 7db - love the wording...'if it can't be shown in the proper colours then it doesn't have to be really'.

I award you the official ADUK status of: 'Traffic Sign Nerd Supremo'
