I'm looking to compile a list of fun cars that meet the following criteria (if indeed there are any):

- CO2 output of under 120g/km
- List price under £20,000
- Not a 4x4 or kit car

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Chris

Choose from http://www.greencarsite.co.uk/CONGESTION-CHARGE-EXEMPT-CARS-LIST.htm

I'd want to try VAG cars with the 1.4 TDi PD engine (I'm concerned about potential CR costs) ... but I imagine they'll have emasculated it sufficiently to remove most of the fun.

It's interesting to see how many on the list have a diesel engine, but also interesting that there are a few with petrol engines as well.

If I was in your position I think I might investigate the Daihatsu Sirion ... if you think of Skoda as being the budget VW, then Daihatsu may well be the equivalent for Toyota.

Thanks for that link. Gareth. So far, the most fun looking car I've found that matches that criteria is the 118d BMW... :D

My experience of the 1.4 TDI PD was that it was a bit lack-lustre and felt significantly more underpowered than the 1.9 TDI PD despite there only being 20bhp difference between the two. Not very refined either for longer journeys.

Presuming it has to be new (enough) for CO2 based tax to matter then?

Well my Peugeot 207 with the deisel HDi 112 6 speed set up comes in at 119 CO2 and thus £30 a year tax and zero on new purchase.

No fun to drive? I don't think I've taken you out in this new car of mine. Perhaps that needs to be remedied. Might change your mind about no fun. :)

I've not driven one, but despite Clarkson's hatred of them, the new Prius is just below £20K, and is supposed to be reasonable to drive, according to Parkers.

How about a Porsche 918? I know it's a bit over your cash budget, but it's well below what you've allowed for carbon dioxide!

Sorry but 'fun' and 'green' don't go together in my experience...but I look forward to being enlightened.

Mini Cooper D is below 100, mind you a Cooper S is only 136g/Km

What about Ford Fiesta diesels, Toyota Yaris or iQ, Mazda 2 diesel, Suzuki Swift (new model), Alfa Mito (Multiair engine is supposed to be good or diesel), BMW 320d, Volvo C30 1.6d, Audi A1, Honda Jazz, VW Polo or Golf (Bluemotion), Kia cee'd 1.6d.

I presume Fiat is off your list?
