So why are UK number plates different colours i.e. white at the front and yellow at the back?

So you know which way round the car is (at night).
Some may say there are other clues, but you know how it is in this country.

... and, I would suggest, to avoid annoying reflections from a white plate at the back ...

On the other hand, white is easier to read (more contrast) in an un-illuminated location such as on the front of a car.

Similar to front white lights at front and red at rear - so you tell a a'coming from a'going!

. . . Is what I remember from when they were introduced.

I wonder if more countries will change similar sized and reflective plates as ANPR becomes more widespread?

Hi. New here.... However I believe it's because the light reflecting off a white number plate would be too bright for following cars :D

There not plastic and reflective like British ones though. German ones are stamped metal construction and painted.

Ours are made with that lovely SEG reflective material we used to use on road signs. None of that modern microprismatic nonsense we have now
