Where they put two signs on one pole, Roadcraft says read them "top down".

Is there any reference to this in pre-advanced driving books?

Chapter 4 of The Traffic Signs Manual

"1.28 Where two or more warning signs are
erected together, the sign relating to the hazard first
encountered should be placed uppermost"

Experience suggests it's a rule not followed 100% faithfully.

Which is possibly why when I looked in 'Know Your Traffic Signs', 'The Highway Code' and 'The Driving Manual' I could find no reference to it.

I was told (unnnofically) to also consider that the top sign is of higher importance / risk than the lower, regardless of which one comes first.

At the end of the day a road sign does not indicate severity of the unseen hazard so it goes down to driving speed for the road / conditions etc.

I assume that the horizontal order is left to right?

I would assume they were simultaneous!
Do you have any examples, as I'm struggling to think of any?

Low clearance warning signs on an arm of an advanced direction sign. One gives height in metric, the other gives it in imperial measurements.

That's my tuppence worth
