Hi all,

I'm a PhD student studying Psychology at the University of Nottingham. I'm funded by the ESRC and the Scottish Government and we're all trying to find out more about how people interact with in-car technology (how often, which devices etc.) and their attitudes towards it.

We would greatly appreciate it if you would complete our questionnaire (link below). It should take around 15 minutes.

Thank you for your time!

Hi Elisha,

I have an iPhone, which I use in the car for music, hence it is my MP3 player.

Following through the questions, I answer "increased risk of accident" as unlikely, yet the next question asks:

"My increased risk of being involved in an accident due to an MP3 player is ...."

This is where I have stopped, because there is no incresed risk because I don't touch it whilst the car is moving.

My understanding is that that question ask you how you feel about the proceeding answers so in your case, do you feel that having no increased risk is good or bad?

I started but soon got tired of the slant. I answered "I never use my mobile phone while driving" and lo, the next question wanted to know if my increased risk of accident from using a mobile phone was good or bad - how am I supposed to answer that?

We seem to get this kind of survey every now and then. You'd have thought a supervisor would have vetted the questionaire.

I scrubbed around it at the same point.
Could it be the whole thing is slanted to gain the results the surveyor requires I wonder?

Have any of you sent her an email explaining your reservations?

The instructions say in a number of places 'If you don't use ..., imagine you did'.

Good way to get the results you want though. Ask a strawman question and don't listen to the fact it's a bad question. Does the survey writer have an ambition to enter politics?

/haven't looked at it, and given the feedback above, probably won't.

No doubt they will follow the thread and answer accordingly.

Why don't they just look at the IAM website for data? The 'Media and Research' tab, along with the IAM 'Live News feed' provide lots of curious data outcomes.
