I am also such and currently considering a new car to replace my Subaru Impreza Turbo.
I'm looking at such as Focus ST, GolfR and S1.

Oh, I'm only pulling your legs here! :P

If it was me, I'd add the Pug 208 GTI into that list, never has a modern Peugeot look more pretty!

Nope, only good Pugs were 205GTI, 205T16, 306 Rally and 405 MI16.
Always a commentary, spoken or not.
Keeps one safe. One hopes.

Oooh, someone with taste. 205-T16 is still on my dream garage list. I find it rather sad - I've had quite a few quick pugs (including some of those listed), yet modern ones do nothing for me at all.

I think the Pug 208 GTI is a lovely looking car. Sure, it might be crap to drive, (I don't know, I can't drive) but it sure does look pretty.

I agree about its looks. Not driven it yet but I do own a 208 feline 1.6 diesel and the handling is excellent matching far more expensive cars.

Sorry, still looks like an ugly blobby lump to me. And would almost certainly handle better if the GTi was on the 15" rims that the 306 (and 405 Mi-16) had.

And I certainly can't see the 208 aging as well as this

And it won't age as well as one of these:

The saddest thing is, how well a car ages is probably irrelevant in our world now. People just don't seem to care about preserving cars from the modern age. If it breaks, well, just swap it.

We see lots of old, well preserved icons of motoring, but I don't think I've come across any car produced in the last 10 years that we could consider an icon.

I've not discovered any car where you just have to say the name, like "Mustang", and even non-car people will nod and immediately know what you're on about.

You can say "Lamborghini", and people will know what you're saying, but say "Gallardo", and I suspect a lot of people will just go "huh?".

[/pondering modern life]

Now, back to Modern Family and my coffee.

Did a couple of hundred km's in a new shape Opel Corsa today. A bit more refined than I'd expected but the interior was far from well put together and the steering had a nasty dead spot around the straight ahead. The Fiesta I drove a while ago was a good steer but the interior was a bit a brash. Clearly, I've got a bit of a thing about a car's insides, but it's the only bit of the car you see when you're driving it! Have you looked at the current (soon to be discontinued) shape Polo?

I've recently got a Focus 1.6 tdci on a 63 plate and on the whole I'm happy with it. It is the zetec spec which has all the toys I need for my commute and returns 70 mpg ish on a run and 60 ish combined. If I'm being picky I dont think the electronic power steering has the same feel as the more traditional when putting it through its paces but on the whole it's good!

Right guys, many thanks for all your suggestions and comments; well, most of them anyhow!

Actually, Dave, I can be a bit dense at times but I'm not deaf, so I'm not attracted to the Citigo if it is noisy, whatever its other qualities might be.

Anyhow the deal was done yesterday, and Eileen is acquiring a 2005 Fiesta Ghia 5 door (actually it's 4 doors + tailgate by my reckoning!), 1.4 petrol engine, white leather interior that looks as if nobody has ever sat in it. It's had one lady owner from new, and it has only covered 27,000 miles. It appears to be a car that has been used sparingly and carefully, and very nicely maintained.

At £3995 it may seem a bit expensive for a small car that is nine years old, but we saw various other Fiestas only £500 cheaper but with 70,000 miles on them, so I don't feel we have done the wrong thing.

Thanks again for your help.

I'm now looking forward to our property deal reaching completion so I can get busy with that garden.... 8)

Best wishes all,
Dave and Eileen - two retired OAPs.
