A bit off-topic, but will probably appeal to car enthusiasts...

What do you think of this?

http://www.landspeed.com

I can't help wondering, if sawing the wings of an old plane and sticking an old man in the driving seat is going to work, why on Earth has Richard Noble bothered putting together a team of highly skilled aerodynamicists and engineers together and employed the services of an RAF pilot in order to break the sound barrier (again) and further raise the land speed record?

Rich,

As some here know, I'm a Bloodhound Ambassador and I quite agree - 'American Eagle' is not a serious attempt on the LSR. They've run at 400mph and will be lucky if they get to 600. The competitor the bloodhound team consider most likely (apart from themselves of course!) is http://www.aussieinvader.com. Rosco is a great guy with previous!

I think if they get to 600 mph they could have major problems! The luckiest thing for them (although they might not realise it) would be to run out of money and prevent themselves having a massive accident.

Ron Ayers and Ben Evans are two of the knowledgeable experts in their field. To think you can beat a vehicle designed by them with absolutely no research whatsoever is either shockingly naïve or incredibly arrogant.

As a Bloodhound ambassador, I'm sure you'll have read the books or seen the documentaries about Thrust SSC. Do you recall Andy Green describing keeping Thrust SSC in a straight line as like holding wet spaghetti vertical? I'm not being ageist, but really? You need a seriously skilled driver in the peak of his physical and mental condition to do a job like that!

The NAE projects seems to be all about painting, polishing and publicising a "car" which they never actually get round to running!

I think that's a little unkind...I think they are having a hoot giving it a go. I bet if you asked them privately they don't hold out much hope but are enjoying 'the journey'.

Are you an ambassador and if not, why not!

Possibly a little, but after more than ten years you'd expect to see something happening.
I'm not an ambassador of Bloodhound. But would certainly be interested. What does it involve?

I've worked for these sort of Americans on an unmanned aircraft project for a couple of years. The unwritten philosophy is that talking about stuff is as cool as doing it. Their boundless optimism in the face of history and the laws of physics was both infuriating and hilarious. On the plus side, despite some serious determination, they didn't manage to kill anyone.

A previous post described your comments as 'unkind'.

Given that they have achieved: Jessi Combs becomes Fastest Women on 4-Wheels ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5lZFvKu ... v8Qluy0Qf_ ) with a top speed of 440 and a two-way average of 392.9 mph . . . perhaps 'ill-informed' would be more accurate?

It's unpaid and you can do as much or as little as you want. I tend to specialise in doing public talks and helping at events with only a small involvement in the schools side. There's about 550 ambassadors across the UK and it's a great way to get more involved in the project and meet the guys and gals.

And as a moderator, you'll allow horse to drive another member away by being offensive?

Thanks for ambassador link; I'll have a good read, as it is something I'd like to support however I can.

I'm not ill-informed; I'm actually very well-read on the topic. An average speed of 394mph was first achieved in 1947. Recreating this over half a century later is no big deal - regardless of the gender of the driver.

If that's an apology to the US team, then fair enough :) You tell us whether your comments were well-informed or not? :?:
