I've had a quick look and is seems either will do in ordinary English usage. (Still trying to get my head round JC's cycling post though) :)

For those who cannot be bothered looking it up The Oxford English Dictionary has this to say on the subject:

In Latin, data is the plural of datum and, historically and in specialized scientific fields, it is also treated as a plural in English, taking a plural verb, as in the data were collected and classified. In modern non-scientific use, however, it is generally not treated as a plural. Instead, it is treated as a mass noun, similar to a word like information, which takes a singular verb. Sentences such as data was collected over a number of years are now widely accepted in standard English.

Thanks chaps.

Conclusion: I'm going to continue to feel comfortable saying 'this data', without feeling I'm seriously wrong to do so, which is an immense relief. 8)

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Isn't the "data" contained within files?

Sounds like you've been there. It's the lovely sedate way they slowly lean over to one side and fall to the ground at traffic lights. Once the bike starts to lean over your doomed. Incidentally I guess you must know the tension can be adjusted. :? Surprising how many don't know.

....and the files are contained within cakes, for those who may need a means of escape? Just thinking ahead, y'see.

Best wishes all,
Dave - mad, quite mad.

PS: back on topic, I'm now finding I can't hire a van (I'm too old, apparently) counterpart or no counterpart! :(

It's the bit about you being a cyclist that I have a problem with.

I'll have you know, young man, that in my late 50's I was still cycling a regular 400/500 miles a week and taking part in cyclosportives here and in the South of France not forgetting to mention I was a licensed Road Racing Assistant Commissaire until retiring last year. These youngsters have no respect for their elders and betters.
