I haven't, I'd rather take one of those micro-scooters along with me and fold it up on the trains, and scoot about when necessary ;)

Staying away from London is a better idea.

In Wales, doing a week of volunteer work on the Ffestiniog Railway

The wifi in the hostel I stayed at wasn't all that great, and nor was the 3G :(

Sounds great! I really want to make a trip up to the Ffestiniog/WHR. Double Fairlies and Garretts - gotta see 'em! Btw, is this the most extreme case of thread drift in the history of this forum? Abolition of driving licence counterpart to narrow-gauge steam railways :D (And my anorak is green!!)

As long as we don't get onto the golden rule for driving steam engines we're home and dry.

BTW I think that it is "don't let the water level get too low in the boiler, keep it at a REASONABLE level"

I thought it was 'Get enough steam up before the climb" :D

 How about
'Always have enough steam up for the climb you know to be ahead and keep a reasonable level of water in the boiler'
:P

Can we please avoid these references to old boilers?

Something young and frisky (or at least youthful and not completely past it) is much more appealing; especially to an old git that's trying not to feel his age....

I'll have you lot know that with my extensive knowledge of steam railways, the most important rule of railways is Rule 55.

When you are stopped by a signal at Danger, you have to whistle, and if the signal isn't cleared immediately in fog or bad weather, or after 3 minutes in clear conditions, the driver has to send the fireman to the signalbox to remind the signalman of the presence of the train.
The fireman has to then make sure all correct precautions for the protection of the train are in place, and then he has to sign the visitor's book, then return to his train.

;)
