Just having a lunchtime browse through the used car adds - well, it idles away a few minutes. I've come across Renaults fitted with...

Critical Sliding Velocity understeer control

A quick Google throws up lots of Renaults fitted with it but nothing to suggest what it does or how it does it. Anyone care to make a suggestion - either factual or something humorous that's made up.!?

Well, there's a video:

The name 'Critical Sliding Velocity' is a load of arse to cover for the fact that its French name is Contrôle or Correction de Sous-Virage (understeer).

Hmmm so it's ESC but from their website, 'enhanced by an additional understeer control function which corrects understeer in emergency situations.'

Does 'classic' ESC only correct oversteer then?

StressedDave wrote:Nope... it ought to work in both directions. I wonder if the Renault system identifies the 'I've steered too much, stalling the tyres, causing epic understeer and I'm about to crash' moment and gives a little more impetus to turning the car around what it thinks it can achieve rather than what it thinks the driver is telling it.

ESC algorithms are a bit of an art form at best.

Wait 'til steer-by-wire becomes the norm
