I think I saw something on the TV about this once. The tricky ones to do freehand were the cyclist, it was said. It was also said by one road painter that he could recognise who'd made markings locally by the "style" of the lettering! Very impressive none the less, although perhaps not quite conforming to TSRGD if one can identify the author/writer by nuances of the lettering.
