One option if cash is tight is to join a local RoADAR group as an associate, take the training but don;t do the test for a bit.

Most groups charge only a modest (ours is only £20, but it does vary a lot over the country) fee for associate membership, and while some can be a bit "sniffy" about people doing the training but not the test many are more concerned about helping to improve driving standards than the test. If you keep the membership up most would be happy to do a quick refreshes as and when you were able to do the test.

I my view the only significant difference, other than cost is that RoADA have the 3-yearly retests, wheras the IAM is "for life" (albiet they do now offer options for retakes or even the master program).
