My wife had it on her wish list for our just taken trip and it was really worth it.
Though, like many off the beaten track New Zealand roads, a tarmac rally car would have been my choice, rather than an auto boggo hire car.
If you're ever in this area, drive it for the scenery, the history of the road and the rail line as well as the actual driving.
