On a fun run out yesterday, we came across this sign combination...
we have our own idea of what it means, but thought it would be interesting to see what the ADUK collective thinks...

The national speed limit was 30 all along!

Highly unlikely. Why would anyone want to do that?

It's obvious - NSL only if you're overtaking.

our view - was NSL for those driving on the right (the French etc.) and 30 for those driving on the left (Brits)

NSL applies for qualified advanced drivers only?

presumably you are in the middle of the road, so as Gannet suggests - you can do 45mph

this seems logical - car in front on the left can do 30 - you can do 45 to get a view / initiate an overtake; and 60mph to overtake :)

Yes this seems logical and of course assuming the signs are mirrored, the vehicles coming towards are limited to 30 making overtakes easier & safer.

What could possibly go wrong?

Indeed, I am beginning to see a master plan here :)

It is rather like those chicanes where one direction has priority... only applied to speed limits..

It's a test for 'advanced drivers maths'. Fits in the matrix...

The answer is....30 x 60=180mph... Unless it's one half of a dual carriageway... In which case a reasonable 210mph limit..surely that's arguable in court?

Surely you know what speed limit you are in approaching said signs so know which one has been span around? :P

Advanced driver but not advanced maths

I thought 30 x 60 was 1800 mph :?:

Just a little faster than Concord could fly at :D

what are speed limits?! :D

of course we were out on a sunny afternoon pootle in a sports car, we were wearing cravats and had the wicker hamper on the back, so didn't go above 20 anyway - to be honest I have never understood what those black and white signs mean - the car is an automatic, it has bimble mode or 40mph mode - personally I prefer that as you just go everywhere at 40mph and the fuel consumption is great... are we meant to do something with those signs?
