If you had an unlimited budget, and you could purchase any car you like, on one condition:
You have to own that one car, and nothing else for the next 10 years, and you would be running it on your normal wages and whatever, what would you get?

simple - range rover - probably RR Sport SVR

does everything - 5 people / off-road / sports car / etc.

have run range rovers before, so happy to do that, stunning car - was looking at one on Saturday (not to buy sadly!)

Not a good way to use an unlimited budget! Anyway, I am very materialistic, so it would have to be a McLaren F1, keep it in a heated motor house, don't drive it, take taxis for 10 years, and then sell it for mega-millions!

More sensibly, it would be a big quick estate. I would be agonising about whether petrol or diesel was the way to go - I hope it will be a little clearer by the next time I change my car.

So if I didn't have to pay to purchase it, but only pay running costs, I'm in a 'fortunate' position: being old and boring insurance for a high-group car isn't excessive and with my Focus ST I'm used to poor fuel consumption and high road fund...so...

...but having driven none of the above, first mission would be to arrange extended test drives.

Having almost done this, I bought a ex-demo Renault Scenic in September 2004 and sold it in December 2013, replacing it with another one.

The alternative would probably be a Discovery. Enhanced by Overfinch, JEE or similar

It's a very good question.

When I'm buying a car I'm always having to compromise and wishing I could get a higher spec or bigger model or some expensive option. With unlimited resources, I'm a bit stumped. It would probably be better if someone said I could spend twice as much on my next car.

I've just gone on to the Land Rover configurator.

Well, my perfect Range Rover would cost £111,070.

That's with the 4.4l TDV8.

I'm not daft enough to get the petrol.

For me it'd be, as a practical car with performance, a totally restored and with braking and lights upgrades, Subaru WRX STI Version VI Limited Sports Wagon. Only 500 made and it'd be an import so need to go through all the import stuff.
But, apart from fuel consumption which doesn't bother me, I can maintain it and it has the virtue of having not too much of the "digital".

Good choice. Maintenance etc is the one aspect that puts me off anything "modern" if you're going to be stuck with it for 10 years.

If I could keep the shed too (so I wasn't piling miles on it commuting), then probably some sort of classic Porsche. If I had to use it all the time, E39 M5. I think I could just about stomach the petrol bill...
