My new home area seems to like these signs. But do they achieve anything? Are they evidence based or just street clutter? I'm inclined to think they are the latter.

Be careful - if you go any further with that thought Martin will tell you off :P
there is only the road, nothing but the road ...

Aye, no wonder the local authorities are always short of money.

At Scaling Dam (A171 Whitby to Guisborough road) there's a sign with a similar message. It tends to stay unaltered for years at a time, so it can't possibly be right. It's a complete waste of money.

I was there a couple of weeks ago and it reminds me that the one from Chop Gate to Helmsley could have dead pheasant numbers on it come the autumn... Whenever I drive there it looks like death row for them.

Ah, the Wirral.

I've occasionally driven around there while visiting my sister in Liverpool, and have never found any variation in the number on the board every time I go past them.

My sister's just completed her first year at university, just to give you a sense of how many times we've been up there xD

Street clutter especially if not updated.

Spend the money on improving the road etc at the most frequent accident spots.

The pedant in me requires that I, as one born and raised there, inform you that it's either "Wirral" or "The Wirral Peninsula" :D

And, in case it comes up ..ROYAL Tunbridge Wells!

Mind you ex-pats are often more 'pat' than residents...speaking as a Tyke.
