I am saving for a new car atm, and am looking for a new (well used) car.

I want something with 4/5 doors and needs to be relativley quick.

Price limit is about £6,000 for me atm.

Was thinking of an ST200.

Any Advice or alternate suggestions?

Virtually all cars in your price range will easily reach the national speed limit, and go beyond! What top speed are you really looking for?

well, its not top speed, but accelleration and torque really.

Having said that, somthing I wouldent be ashamed to take to a track day.

Round the sort of St200, Volvo T5, Omega mark. So that is about 200bhp ish.

Would you consider a turbo diesel? Or must it be petrol?

I have a TD atm, I want a petrol next really.

It will be used as an everyday car, but I want to be able to enjoy the country roads round here. (somerset / devon border)

Would you consider a practical everyday classic? You really enjoy the country roads is quite a few practical 4-5 door cars I can think of although not as enjoyable MPG.
I realise classics are not everybody's cup of tea but I believe that for ultimate enjoyment you cant beat having full control with no computers and power steering.
There are hundreds of options for the practical classics, some quite easy to get spares for, some very reliable and others just stunning to drive all with unique styling.
Might be an option to consider. 8)

E39 5 series will easily fit your spec and budget, a lovely 4.4 litr V8 (540i) on the beemer site, I'll find you a link.

There you go : http://bavarian-board.com/forum_posts.a ... 33883&PN=1

That should be quick enough, and very driveable when you just want to toodle.

From driving both my firends standard T5 estate, and chris's chipped one (albeit only a short drive in chris's) I'd make sure your happy with power & front wheel drive...it didn't suit me

I have heard that if you send more than 200bhp to the front wheels you get some problems, namley torque steer and the inability to get the power down.

Or is it all just torque? (pardon the punn)

Chris loves his T5, and so did my mate.

I didn't like either, for just that reason, torque steer, with power I want at least rwd, preferably four wheel drive, but at least rear.

We are all different though, I'm older, mid 40's, so all the stuff I drove in my earlier days were either rear of 4 wd, and I've always prefered it, I've never understood this fasination with front wheel drive....its just cheaper to produce !

All the quality cars (with the exception of some audi's) are either rear or all 4

I'd like the beemer I've posted the link to myself, he's a real keen owner, so its looked after, my finances don't stretch to a second car at the moment.

Another, even better model (as far as value goes) if you don't mind the size is the 7 series, for the money you have to spend you'll get one with all the toys, leather, sat nav, TV let alone dvd etc etc.

I forgot to mention, don't forget Jaguar and Rover !

For that money you'll get an earlier S type, of just about any 75, including the estate.....for my style of driving I found them both to be good, although the Rover is fwd, its not as violent as the ovlov T5.

Scooby or Evo would be my choice as they're pretty bulletproof (assuming they've been properly looked after). One thing to consider though is cars with a bit of go, will require more frequent (expensive!) servicing as well as get through more tyres and more petrol. They'll also be a lot steeper to insure.
