DSA Examiner Recruitment

Hello all..

Wonder if anyone may be in the same boat as me then...?

I just got a letter from the DSA saying I have been successful at the interview stage for the job of Driving Examiner...great eh???

However, the letter also says that at this point in time there are no vacancies in my area and they will let me know when one comes up.

Why would they do this? Anybody had a similar experience?

I can only comment on that of LGV examiners who are tasked to examine at test stations far away from their home and are put up in digs for the week - hope you like staying away all week :roll:

It's the Civil Service.

You go on a list now and they'll call you.

I've heard of applicants being on lists for 12-18 months. (Not for DSA I hasten to add).

Hi Andy and welcome. I've now got a date for Interview next month (mid-August). I've heard from a couple of others who are in the same position as me. I also heard about the lack of current vacancies but was also told by a SE friend, that there are a large number due to retire (at least in Scotland) at the end of this year, so to be prepared to wiat.

I must admit, I'm not in a hurry to change, but I'm frustrated where I am so fancy a change. I don't think going back down the ADI route is viable in the current climate, and the LGV/PCV CPC will be about another year before it starts to develop.

I do think a year for recruitment is a bit excessive :roll:

I know from 10 years Local Authority, that things move slowly, but the lack of progress and poor communications from the DSA is rediculous. I must admit to wondering whether or not to continue.

12 - 18 months is nothing !

It took me over 2 years to get in !!

I've been considering training as an examiner as there is very little work as an ADI in my area at the moment. It is always poor at this time of the year, but this winter is the worst I've known in six years as an ADI, and now with a reccesion I can only see it getting worse.

Many who lose their jobs may be tempted by the advertisments claiming earnings of 30k + per anum, spend 2/3k training, and then find that the expected earnings just don't materialise.

Every time I look on the DSA website they are not recruiting at the moment. Perhaps if I apply now I might be considered for interview before I reach 63yrs.

Nigel,

the DSA are very sneaky with their recruitment adverts. Only on the website, well hidden at that and seem to be about October time. I applied Oct/Nov 2007 :shock:

At all stages it has been painfully slow and poor communications from them. To be honest I've all but given up hope even though I've passed all the stages so far. Cardington would be next if a vacancy comes up in my area.

I applied to become a DSA Examiner in October 2007. I jumped through the hoops (paper sift, Examiner TT and HPT, Examiner Special Driving Test and finally the interview.

Weeks passed and finally I received a letter from the DSA advising me that I had been successful, but there were no vacancies in my area 'at the moment'.

Time elapsed is now 15 months - and still nothing! I managed to keep my spirits up for the first few months but I have now reached a stage where I am frustrated by the wait (polite understatement).

A wise old man (retired DSA Examiner) said to me "Welcome to the Civil Service". I just wanted others to know that they are 'not alone'.

If you want to read an amusing 'advanced driver' thread, check out the following link (I suggest it smacks a little of pomposity, arrogance etc easily found when Class 1 police drivers are compared with us mere 'advanced drivers', 'Cardington Special Test' graduates etc. Enjoy...
