As you said, Dave. Steer in. Suddenly slow. Back end lightens resulting in loss of grip which produces oversteer.
Advanced instructors would go out for training and I would be invited along to join in. During pursuit sessions, though, I would only observe.
Don't know how it worked but I think it was the Peugeot 306 which had passive rear wheel steering which was achieved through the suspension.
