The one road sign that eludes me!

Hi everyone

I'm not a learner as I've been driving for nearly three years. As signs go I think I'm pretty good, but I'm posting a question in this Learner Forum because the answer might help those who are still getting to grips with their road signs.

Basically, what does the below arrow mean? I've done it in ASCII style, but if its hard to make out it is supposed to be an upward left facing arrow.

#############

########
####          #
#                     #
                             #
                                   #

You can off course get them facing upward right as well. It seems to me that its means that the road ahead forks left for your destination. But, then I've seen them elsewhere where that doesn't make sense.

I feel really stupid for bringing it up now actually. Maybe somebody should quickly let me know!

Thanks

Directional arrow on a route board is the only place I can think of .....

Image

Cannot think of just an arrow like that on its own sign

You know I forgot to mention that they're accompanied by place names or road numbers, as in the picture took by Rog.

OK. So they represent directions. But in what sense exactly? Does it mean "over there"? On a local route near me it accompanies a hospital name, but there's a main road and a roundabout ahead before you can get to it by turning left at that roundabout.

Just what is the official definition of these signs?

For a dual carriageway or motorway they represent the next (or a subsequent) exit slip-road that you should take to follow the recommended route to the places named.
there is only the road, nothing but the road ...

Stack type advanced direction/direction sign.

Forgive the thread hijack but Big Err: is there any provision in the regulations to have a speed limit applicable for certain times/days like some bus lanes?

How about this one:

http://maps.google.co.uk/?ie=UTF8&ll=51 ... .7,,1,8.26

I assume it means "Bear right only".

Bear right only for THAT traffic light

It would seem that in the past others might have proceeded in the left lane when the lights for the right two lanes went green

Quite agree. However I have witnessed confusion by 'arrowed' lights in the past and wondered just what the driver is seeing.

That's surprising...I thought the white arrows in a blue circle meant: 'if you are passing this sign you must do so on this side' - but clearly this is not the case. How confusing.

I'd agree, anyone passing to the left of that sign is technically committing an offence. Maybe the secondary signal for the left turn should also have a blue arrow but pointing left.
