Just the truck, no trailer at all. Are they under 7.5 tonnes? And if so, can I drive one trailerless on the C1 category of my driving licence?

The weight depends on whether its a twin axle or triple axle, and if it has a sleeper or not,the basic twin axle non sleeper are around 5.5 to 6 ton. If the fifth wheel coupling is still attached then you can not drive it on a ordinary licence.

OK lets make a few things clear

An artic unit is a RIGID vehicle under either C1 or C licence
To be fair - on the old HGV rules many years ago it could only be driven on a HGV class1 licence

The fifth wheel has NOTHING to do with anything
Does a car with a towbar fitted make it a B+E ? - nope

The plated GVW listed on the VOSA plate is what determines what licence is required to drive it

C1 if plated under 7.5 tonnes
C if plated over 7.5 tonnes

Thanks ROG. I had a feeling you might know :) . I guessed that would be the case but I wasn't sure. Any idea if a GVW below 7.5 tonnes is uncommon?

Unlikely to get a unit with GVW below 7.5 tonnes but I believe they can be downrated to that

I would think a call to your nearest VOSA commercial test station should answer any downrating questions
