I joined about early January and have been reading ever since.

I'm 18 and have an IAM F1RST.
I drive a Fiat Grande Punto 1.4 Active Sport 8v.

My favorite pet hate is insurance (as the IAM forumers here will know).

Hello and welcome aboard. I may not be the most prolific poster myself, but am always glad to see like minded members of a similar age to myself (I'm 19 btw).

Your Punto looks smart too, but as you say insurance is a problem. Assuming you passed your driving test at 17, you'll have 2 years NCD next year, and this opens doors as far as car choice in concerned.

Hi,

Thanks. :)

I did pass at 17 and the IAM test at 18 but I'll only have 1 years NCB in September. I was coming onto a roundabout with queing traffic on the left lane, I was heading for the right lane. I inched out at 1/2MPH and a driver shot out of the traffic and caught my drivers side wing. Insurance company declared it as my fault, even though I was hardly moving.

Car choice is a tricky one really, this 1.4 Active Sport was about £500 cheaper to insure than a 1.2 Active.

£3000 for 6000 miles on a tracker, per 1000 miles extra is another £400.

Our family doesn't have many choices when it comes to cars I'm afraid with how our drive is (0 to a 40ish degree slope very quickly).

Even my front bumper get's very close and the rubber flap under it scrapes:

The Audi's not doing too bad thanks.

I'm debating whether to have it re-mapped or not. Im currently getting around 50-55ish mpg round town and about 67-72mpg on a decent run. Dont know how much you can improve on that, and if the cost of re-mapping is worth it?

You managed to find a reasonable insurance company for when you're due to renew yet?
Mike.

Not sure but I tend to prefer to keep the car as standard as possible really, by remapping you can be putting more stress on the components of the car.

Not yet. :( Need to buy more miles now. My Birthday is on- Saturday and I'll be going to The Ship Inn just south of York. :)

I'll be calling IAM Surety probably on Monday as I won't have time on Saturday.

Ive got a 59 plate A3 1.9TDI... I used to have an S60 and needed something a little more fuel efficient!

@Mike

The VAG TDI engines are all a great target for remapping IMHO. The generic maps from places like Superchips tend to be pretty conservative and safe. Can actually increase fuel economy slightly while giving that little bit extra mid-range torque.

(sorry, I'll stop derailing this thread now :P)

Which Brotherton day was that? I went to one a while back... trying out observing without IPSGA for the new modular thing.

Cheers.

My last car, 1.9tdi Seat Leon, was running a stage 1 remap, done by Jabbasport. Lovely feel to it, normal sedate driving still possible at half throttle - it's worth going to a VAG specialist IMO. The fuel return was pretty good, easily 5 mpg, a bit more if I really worked at it, but the figures weren't quite as good as yours to start with - is yours the common rail version?

I didn't have any problems with mine (um, apart from a funny noise I couldn't find  ), but she was mapped at about 40k and I sold her at about 80k.
