The John Miles book is indeed a good read, and HB copies can be found at not too great a price if you look on secondhand sites such as abebooks.com (I think mine cost under a tenner). It's a reprint from the 1980s I think.

Many other good ones out there too.

I used to do that if I braked to a halt in whatever gear I approached the junction in ( as I would have done in a car ) then clicked down into neutral once stopped .

Getting a block change wrong at speed and locking up the back wheel could have been disastrous - I never tried it .
