ROSPA Bronze - Now what?

Discussion on Advanced and Defensive Driving.

Postby Fignon » Thu Oct 13, 2011 10:15 am

I have just passed the ROSPA at bronze level. Do I have to wait three years before a retake?

I am keen to improve to gold level, I have plenty of time but not as much money. What options are there?

Thanks.

Have you spoken to your local group? I would imagine they would be happy to help you improve further.
Another option would be to look in the members section for an ADUK driving day and come along to one of those. You don't say where you are - it's also possible there's an ADUK member locally who might be willing to help outside of an ADUK day - I'd certainly be happy to go for a drive with you if you're local to Bristol.

I guess if you pay for the test again then you can retake test? Maybe someone in the know could confirm but as you say there is retest every 3 years. I know with IAM there is an option to resit the test & this seems to be aimed at peeps who wish to achieve the IAM First status

Thanks.

As Jont mentions AD UK days are an excellent of keeping up your adv driving skills & improving them as well. As well as seeking further help from your local group & going out on further observed drives.

Good luck

Yes, if you pay you can retest anytime. IIRC it's £48 and about £3 less if you're under 26

I would be happy to help you with this if you could let me know roughly in what area you live?

Thanks

Thanks for the offer but I live in Northumberland.

Thanks for all the replies, I will contact my local ROSPA and see what can be done.

I live in Chester-le-Street. If you'd like an occasional run out I'd be happy to help. Unfortunately,
I'm poverty-stricken at the moment, so you would have to be willing to travel this part of the world.

If this arrangement would suit you, drop me a line.

In the mean time, try some of these.

They're intended for riders, but many work just as well for drivers.

I have not been sent my written report yet. The main points the examiner brought up were:

Slightly too much speed into corners.

Not using the correct gear to accelerate out of corners.

BGOL and using too high a gear trying to avoid BGOL.

Not getting speed right down when entering 30mhp limit.

BGOL is the main problem, I assume it will take time to get out of old habits.

Thanks

While I obviously didn't see you drive, and your examiner did, it sounds to me like it might be speed into corners that's the problem. Rather than thinking "I should try and break the BGOL habit on the approach to bends", you could try thinking "I should try and approach corners slower to give me more time to assess and prepare". You could think of BGOL avoidance as a tool that might help you achieve that, rather than an end in itself.
