Can anyone recommend a driving school in/near Slough for advanced driving lessons with a view to taking the IAM or Rospa test and which test is preferred?

Welcome Ken (?)

The advanced test is done with either the IAM or ROSPA which are split into local groups - they are not 'driving schools' but more like a club run by volunteers. A local group will prepare you for the test. Take a look at http://www.iam.org.ukand http://www.roadar.org for more details.

Besides making use of volunteers it is possible to find ADIs to help you prepare for an advanced test. The front page of this site has a form for searching for ADIs in your area; I found three covering the SL postcode area that provide advanced driving tuition.

Depends on how much you wish to pay ...

IAM & ROSPA are usually a lot cheaper than going to an ADI

I dont know how much ROSPA is but the IAM is £139 all inclusive

Now I like the IAM, but I also like ROSPA. But which is better?

There's only one way to find out...

Forgot to mention, the local IAM group has meetings at Holyport. The local RoADAR group is based at Reading.

The standard of driving is very similar as they are both based on Roadcraft.

The main difference between IAM and Rospa is that the IAM test pass is for life, wheras Rospa has to be retaken every three years (re-test are free as long as you remain a member).

In most parts of the country Rospa is a bit cheaper (£48 for the test and an (low) associate member fee with the local group vs £139 all in for IAM). The IAM will get you access to their IAM Surety insurance scheme which some of us have found to offer better cover for less cost than we could find on the open market - though this is not guaranteed.

I would advise talking to both local groups to see what their waiting times are like, and also to see which you think you will get on best with as that is probably the biggest single factor TBH.

Sorry to be late on this thread, Ken - I have only registered today and I am playing catch-up

The Thames Valley Group is probably the nearest RoSPA group. We meet every month (normally the fourth Wednesday) at Theale (details on the website - http://www.roadartvg.org.uk/). Newcomers are always welcome!

End of ad...
