Can anyone give me a typical narrative on how to run through your IPSGA when commentating on a drive.

Approaching a roundabout, going to take the 1st exit
Mirror, Signal Left
Position Left
Slow smoothly to the white line in time for vehicle to pass
Taking 2nd Gear
Entering the roundabout
Exiting and accelerating out, National Speed Limit....

Would you add the Information, Position, Speed, Gear, Acceleration tags to the beginning of each bit?

Using an apropriate hazard in the distance is essential IMO

Example -
Long straight SC 40 mph road with roundabout in distance
Speed required to turn right at roundabout = 20 mph

Commentary - information, I can see the RBT where we will be turning right and it seems empty at the moment
We have no one in front and one car behind following a little too closely
right signal now being applied

Position, we are now rechecking all around and easing towards the centre line

Information, the situation has not changed

speed, we are now reducing speed to 20 mph by apply the brakes early and lightly because of the car behind being too close this way we can control their slowing down speed giving them time to react

Gear, we are now releasing the brake pedal to balance the car and changing from 4th to 2nd gear

Information, the situation has not changed

Acceleration, we now apply a little gas as we go round the RBT and increase that as we exit

Information .......

The only thing I would change is instead of..."Slow smoothly to the white line in time for vehicle to pass" I would say... "preparing to stop, looking to go". This tells the examiner that you are slowing [Speed phase] and tells him that you are planning ahead.

I don't think you need to preface each phrase with the IPSGA designation. Your description of what you are doing and the sequence that you use will tell the examiner that you are using the "system", ie. IPSGA.

Doesn't this rather depend on why you are giving the commentary?

Is it to explain to a driver who is new to the system how it looks in practice?
Is it to demonstrate to the examiner that you know what the system is? (Can he really not tell?)
Is it to help you get your use of the system ingrained as you train yourself?
Is it to help a coach diagnose faults in your drive?

I'm not a tremendous fan of commentary for commentary's sake, but if it's there to communicate and fulfil a purpose then should be tailored to that purpose. I'd much rather someone communicated with me through their drive, not their words.

In some cases simply repeating again and again:-
- Taking a look
- There's my line
- There's my speed
- Here's my gear
- And off I go
will be enough.

OP - 7db's questions are good ones to ask yourself.

I did some videos a few years ago showing systematic commentary on YouTube. Search for Custom2212. These are fairly didactic, aimed at a viewer new to the system.
