Discussion on Advanced and Defensive Driving.

Good evening all.

I passed my IAM test about 4 years ago and love the concept and practising safe but progressive driving.

After this time, I feel as if I would like to progress personally and wondered if anybody here had any suggestions of how to go about this?

Is the RoSPA scheme the next step? Achieving a gold pass would certainly be an achievement or are there any alternatives for progression?

Thanks for your help.

Tis good you are keen to continue improving...too many drivers once they've passed IAM or ROSPA consider their driving 'complete'!

So...my suggestions...
* train to be an IAM Observer
* train and take the IAM 'Special Assessment'...soon to be 'Masters'
* go on ADUK driving days
* pair up with an ADUK 'mentor'
* take the ROSPA test
* spend sometime with a pro advanced coach
* add another category to your licence (bike, LGV, towing etc)

And that's not forgetting IAM 'skills days', track days, off-road, rally, skid-pan etc.

I believe there are several past topics discussing this question, but the search function keeps ignoring terms I need to include!

ADUK driving days, and the mentors who have offered their time through this forum, will certainly give you an insight into driving that will take you beyond what you've learnt through the IAM - I recommend them.

Which part of the world are you in?

This is interesting as im looking to further my skills following IAM, I like the idea of the ROSPA continual assessment, but I would also like to get my cat D licence or trailer towing entitlements

I may look into this next summer, id probably further my AD skills more.

What would be really good would be to have a buddy who is also into AD that I can go on drives with to learn from each other.

The driving days also look fun, ie IAM Track days or Skid pan, but may not want to go on my own, unless its a good social event when you get there.

A quick look at the Mentoring thread reveals that there's a willing volunteer in Plymouth!

Assuming you mean somewhere roughly between Andover and Alton, or Basingstoke and Winchester, I may be able to meet up for a drive sometime. Get in touch if you're interested.
