Cancellation of speed limits.

Discussion on Advanced and Defensive Driving.

Is a 50 mph limit cancelled only by the cessation of repeaters or is cancellation only by a subsequent limit?

A major road with side turnings is a case in point. Many of our local side roads have no NL signs where they join a 50 mph limit road.

If it's a permanent 50 then it needs to be ended with another sign (30,40, NSL). Raise it with your local authority - sounds like they've forgotten to put the NSL's up.

If it's temporary for say road works on a motorway then the 'end of roadworks' sign also denotes NSL - but in practice they often put an NSL sign up.

IIAC, a 50 mph limit is cancelled by the NSL sign, or a lower limit if the speed limit lowers.

Phew! Glad we got that sorted. I had no idea what it meant and so when I googled it and found the 'Industrial Injuries Advisory Council', I sort of glazed over.. a bit. Confusion, probably. The explanation sounds spot on to me. All limits are superceded by another limit sign, including the NSL, is how I read it.

While you're at it, you might ask if the council would splash out a bit and have '60mph' with a ring around it painted on the road a few times, as well as installing missing NSL signs. NSL signs are a mystery to most drivers I follow at 40-ish along an NSL with double whites down the useful bits and i'd like to encourage the continuity of 20,30,40,50,... white circle with a black diagonal stripe across it ie doesn't apply to me/ must be for lorries etc.
A wise man once told me that "it depends". I sometimes agree.

So you don’t subscribe to the “it’s a limit, not a target” fraternity then?

It can be both.

I find people who don't treat limits as targets when appropriate exceedingly annoying

M25, from the M4 junction, that's a managed section, and everybody seems to move to L2+ as soon as they join the motorway, even though L1 is empty for miles. You can make up a LOT of time on that section, even if the speed limits are like 40.

The reason? Because everyone is driving at 1mph because of the queues formed by the "MOVE OVER TO THE RIGHT LANE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE BECAUSE FAST FAST FAST!" drivers.
