Three lane roads

This thread deals with three lane roads - two lanes in one direction, and one in the other:

Are there any three lane roads left that have one lane each way and a central overtaking lane?
There used to be a few in my area, County Durham and Northumberland, but there aren't any now.

I would've thought that there were none left, as these systems are noticeably safer than the systems of old, as they grant priority to one of the sides, the fault in an accident would be easier to place.

I think you may be misreading the road shown in the other thread. It IS a 3 lane road with a central lane available to both directions for overtaking. Look carefully at the lane markings.

Yes, as Martin said, the road shown is a three lane S/C with the centre lane available to oposing lanes for overtaking.
That particular stretch is East of Lyme Regis near Charmouth. There is another also on the A35 East of Bridport, and the A37 stretch of the Dorchester by pass is also three lane with the centre lane being available to the oposing lanes to overtake, except where the West bound lane bends South uphill towards Monkey Jump Roundabout and the junction with the A35.

The A35 Chideok Hill, West out of Chideok, the centre lane is only available to the traffic travelling uphill.
There used to be a short three lane stretch on the A354 north of Puddletown, but that has been marked with hatchings bordered by solid white lines to prevent overtaking. All it needed was the downhill Northbound side to be prohibited as it was convenient for overtaking slow vehicles.

Offhand, I can't think of any more in Dorset, but I'm not sure if there is one on the A37 Dorchester Yeovil road.

I don't think Russ_H is referring to whether or not traffic using the side of the road with one lane can move offside to overtake.

He appears to be referring to the old types of road markings forming a 'suicide lane', that is, a middle lane that separates the two lanes of opposing traffic rather than being one of two lanes allocated to one direction.

I haven't seen a suicide lane' for years.

By the way, in the linked example you are free to use both lanes to overtake, opposing traffic permitting, not just the centre lane.

I remember in the pre-M1 days, the A5 had a lot of three-lane sections. The traffic was a lot less in them thar days .... :mrgreen:

Yes, I am referring to roads with a suicide lane. Perhaps I should have been clearer. The type of road shown in the link that I included is commonplace.

In the latter, there appears to be room for an overtake without actually crossing the central markings. In the former, the hatched area is almost wide enough for a lane in its own right. Are there examples of this where the marked area is the same width as the lanes either side?

How amazing. Is that a dedicated overtaking lane or what? :lol: :D I like it lets have more. Could do with them on motorways it might stop the use of the overtaking lanes except for when overtaking. :roll:
