Discussion on Advanced and Defensive Driving.

Postby AdamW » Tue Nov 29, 2005 12:20 pm

Hello all,

I have just had the phone call to confirm my observation time from my Senior Observer.
He sounds very straight laced and it has made me nervous.
I am not a normally nervous person but this has got me going!

Anyone got any tips/advice to help me calm down and get the most out of my drive to show him I can/do drive well?

Thanks in advance.

Adam

Hi Adam
My advice would be not to look upon him as a senior observer, but as guiding
hand. If you do happen to make a mistake mention it to him, put it behind you and carry on with the drive.
You know you have the skills so go out and enjoy.

Adam...

One of my many roles is as an IAM Senior Observer....and you enjoyed it when I went out with you.....

Don't worry...you'll be fine.... :?

Adam,
It may sound trite, but do try and relax beforehand. Try the deep breathing exercise to help you. As mentioned, if you feel you've made a mistake, then mention it briefly (putting it in the memory bank for later analysis) and then get back to the task in hand.

Someone who was doing the HPC course with me a while ago, started off the drive and made several errors in quick succession. She was compounding the situation by dwelling on the previous mistakes and I could see she was getting more and more irritated with herself. We pulled into a lay-by - she got out, walked round the car, gently kicking each tyre and muttering to herself and then returned to the driving seat. "That's better." she announced - and proceeded to give me the most exemplary drive :)

Good luck

Visulise what he looks like naked!
You will either;
Chuckle all the way round,
Realise there is nothing to be afraid of, or
Frighten yourself so much that you won't worry about your driving.

Seriously just relax, what is the worst that can happen. He has been through it all before and if he's half a reasonable assessor (nay person) he will try to relax you before hand.
If he doesn't then you are already one up. e.g. his ability to assess is poorer than your ability to drive.

Hello all,

I will try and keep calm. Really silly, I am not a nervous person.

I will report back Friday afternoon to let you know how the run went.

Hey Adam
You've been out for a run with Safety? Well I'd be taking comfort in the fact that he says you'll be fine cos I bet he's a hard taskmastser and he doesn't say it lightly

Loads of advice already given, just stay focused and the time will go quickly. Enjoy, and show him what you can do!!

Adam
Your Observer wouldnt have passed you on to the Senior if they didnt think you would do well. Look on it as someone else to admire your driving skills, not tear them apart. Good luck

Duh had to read it twice VH to make sense of it   Miss Lucy Locket runs on green fuel and all output is recycleable although I'm not sure if her passion for jaffa cakes hasn't caused some pollution somewhere along the line.

IAM exam done and passed yesterday with flying colours.:D

The examiner could only comment my steering was a little stiff but he hadn't any other problems what so ever.

So next RoSPA. 8)
