Posted: Tue May 03, 2011 4:29 pmIt's a Honda CBF600, it's a reliable bread and butter bike, nothing fancy. I think it was one of the first 600cc bikes available with ABS when it came out in 2004, which is why I bought it.
The test was quite challenging, lots of twist and turns, including a 90 degree turn a hundred yards after a 30 to national limit change, where the road looks like it was going straight on but led into an army camp!
It was my first RoSPA test, and I wasn't really sure how "precise" the ride was meant to be, and it was hard work to maintain that level of concentration and that "precisioness" for the ride throughout.
Sometimes the examiner was right beside me, almost riding alongside me
, or a few hundreds yards back, and I didn't know what he was thinking - was I going too fast? too slow? not making enough progress? As a result of that, I was convinced I wasn't going to get that gold, I wasn't aware of breaking any laws, and was using the system throughout, so I was thinking I should pass at least bronze, and I'd be happy with silver, so I was delighted at the end when he asked how I did, and I replied "ok I suppose, didn't get a couple of the bends completely right" and said "I can't see any reason, why I'm not going to give you gold"
What he liked was when riding along the twisty nationals, I was hardly touching the brakes, which showed I was using acceleration sense and being in the right gear to negotiate the bends. Everything else appeared to be safe, systematic and smooth throughout, although I wasn't 100% relaxed on the test, but did my best to ride my own ride.
It's surprising because I'm not out on the bike much, only do about 3,000 miles a year (although admittedly, I did cram in a lot of practise over the bank holiday prior to the test), now the fun part is maintaining that gold!
