The typical cost of an Advanced Driving course is £85 with either the IAM or RoSPA, and as you can see below, if someone really wanted to put the skills to use, savings could be quite useful. The benefits to the motorist certainly outweigh the cost of taking the course in the first place, in terms of money saving, and also in terms of road safety.

Insurance Savings:
Many insurance companies do offer a discount for being an Advanced Driver. Adrian Flux still offer an extra 25% for undertaking the IAM's Max Driver course.

For someone paying £400 per annum for their insurance, this could knock £100 off a premium. As well as statistics showing that advanced driver's are between 50% to 75% less likely to be involved in an accident, meaning they keep their no claims longer, and of course reduce costs as a consequence. Obviously for younger drivers, this would be a great way to cut the cost of insurance.

Advanced Driving UK is also talking to insurance companies to try and improve the number of companies who will provide discounts to Advanced Drivers. More info can be found at http://www.advanced-driving.co.uk/bb/vi ... .php?t=161 as to our campaign.

When looking for car insurance as an advanced driver, the important thing is to get the quote first, then tell them your an advanced driver, otherwise the discounts tend not to apply. At most the company will ask for a copy of the test certificate. Details of our process for cheaper insurance can be found at http://www.advanced-driving.co.uk/car-insurance/

As our insurance company list offering discounts grows, those will be added to our online database.

Fuel and other savings:
The government is now pushing the Safe and Fuel-Efficient Drivers Scheme for company car / white van drivers. These scheme's use advanced driving methods and the Government believes that these measures could offer drivers, businesses and the environment the following benefits (based on a driver doing approximately 15,000 miles a year):

- Save over a quarter of a tonne of carbon emissions;
- Reduce fuel consumption by around 10% per vehicle (for a moderate vehicle avg 35mpg, running 15,000 miles per year, at the current cost of unleaded fuel, that could be a saving of £177 per year).
- up to 59% fewer gearchanges, saving on the gearbox and clutch costs.
- Savings on wear and tear of tyres and brake pads due to better vehicle sympathy.
- fewer accidents, lower insurance premiums, lower running costs and higher resale value of vehicles.

As you can see from above, it's not unreasonable to have a cost saving in the region of almost £280 per year, year on year, from taking an advanced driving course which costs just £85, which is excellent value for money. As well as being a safer driver, and kinder to the environment, people would get to keep more money in their pockets.
