You would probably learn that I do quite a number of things differently from how the book says they should be done, and this would not help you with regard to advanced driving - well not in a positive way!

Perhaps you're not aware of my disastrous initial outing with the IAM - which amounted to virtually unrelieved condemnation of my style.

I know you had a bad experience with, by the sound of it, a pretty appalling IAM observer. I get the impression from reading what you wrote here and elsewhere that it made you cross and disillusioned and knocked your confidence.

It made me pretty cross too, reading about it. Crap coaching makes me cross.

You've been driving a long time, with a very enviable safety record, and you enjoy it.

I'd be surprised if there aren't things in your drivng style that I'd like to emulate or adapt for mine. You'll just have to trust me not to pick up things that won't help me in a positive way :D .

Anybody sparing a thought for this allegedly "pretty appalling IAM observer"?

Maybe this guy's produced a string of perfectly happy IAM test passes? (which is his job? Ok, road safety is in there too).

Just a thought. No one's perfect.

Certainly am. If you think that's rude, you should see what I can write about the general standard of IAM observer training. :shock: The poor observer probably had the same sort of generally pretty poor role models that I did. :? I was very fortunate that one of my supervisors as a trainee was a serving Metropolitan Police driving instructor. He "persuaded" me that I'd better think seriously about educational methodology and about developing an environment in the car where the associate wanted to learn.

I remain immensely grateful to him.

But we're way off topic. Who fancies a nice drive in Essex?

I agree.

The main barrier to that is time limits imposed on the instructing process. (Usually financially led)
Given enough time & patience there are very few who wouldn't be able to reach very high standards of driving (IMHO).

James, this sounds like a good thing to learn, wish to share it with us? I a new thread? I'm sure some of the ADIs could give some useful tips on creating a "learning environment" in the car. I once read a book called "Time to Think" in which it was possible to put together a process to create an environment which allowed people to think, be creative and therefor teach themselves, almost anything.

I run meetings using the same methodology, works a treat. I'm sure there are similar principles with respect to teaching driving.

Quite right, I agree with that.

The man in question has been an Observer for quite some time and he has had numerous IAM test passes. He also told me that he is one of the better Observers. No joking, that's what he said.

With me he had a more difficult case than usual!

I think you'd find it all rather sedate in my car for your tastes, with me observing speed limits & all.

Unless I could arrange some special stuff :twisted:

Not at all Von, even keeping within speed limits I have no doubt it would be very interesting and enlightening. Obviously if something a little less, er, shall we say inhibited could be arranged that would liven things up nicely.

You do realise of course that you have a considerable fan club here, just in case you need a bit of reassurance after getting involved with that other gang! Bunch of rebels they are, bless 'em. :)
